Local Yocal/Genesis Beef and Sloans Creek Heritage Meats are integrating their operations to have a more consistent supply, provide more quality control, and better serve their growing customer base within the 6.5+ million residents of the DFW Metroplex.
Matt and Heather Hamilton started Genesis Beef in 2009. Their family farm is just across the Red River near Coleman, OK. More recently, they purchased the old Hamm’s Meat Market location at 213 N. Tennessee Street in downtown McKinney, TX and opened Local Yocal Farm to Market in December of 2010. Local Yocal is butcher shop focused on fresh-cut local meats including grass-finished beef, feed-lot fed Wagyu-Cross beef from a small feedlot in Melissa, TX (Wagyu is the breed used for Kobe beef in Japan), pastured pork, grass-fed lamb, pastured chicken and locally produced grocery items including honey, cheeses, pasteurized organic milk, produce, and pastured eggs.
Nathan & Ellen Melson’s family farm, Sloans Creek, is near Dodd City, TX about 40 miles northeast of downtown McKinney, TX near Bonham where they raise on non-certified organic grass-fed beef, lamb, goat, and sustainable pastured pork produced from heritage livestock breeds like Red Poll and Irish Dexter Cattle and Red Wattle Hogs.
Shared access to land, livestock, capital, equipment, production expertise, processing capabilities, marketing venues, and customer bases will allow for the continued growth of sustainable family-owned businesses. The Melsons will assume most production and day to day management responsibilities of both the farm locations in Dodd City, TX and Coleman, OK. The Hamiltons will assume most processing, sales, and marketing responsibilities. This integration will allow the businesses to offer acorn finished, heritage breed pork, cut-to-order meat at the McKinney location as well as custom processing, greater marketing opportunities, and increased customer service.
