Monarch Tagging in the Garland Community Garden Saturday
It began at 9AM on Saturday with Monarch netting and tagging in the Garland Community Garden. We had lots of fun. Garland Mayor, Doug Athas was there and got right into the effort of trying to tag a Monarch. However, although we sighted at least four, we were only able to net and tag one. I’m pleased to say I was the one who netted that female monarch—my first Monarch to net. The Mayor held it while I affixed the tag, which officially and uniquely identified this monarch as XGM 268. Her information was entered on the Monarch Watch Org data sheet.
It was fun to be able to spend time with the Mayor and his wife in the garden as well as several of my Loving Garland Green friends. We are in the process of laying down mulch all over the front area of the garden in an effort to make it work-free. Mulch is one great way to move toward that goal. If mulch is placed over weeds and grass, it will keep them in their place. If/when they peek up through the mulch, just put more on top—a lot easier than mowing or pulling weeds and grass. We hope to be finished with the installation of our drip irrigation system in time for the November 4 Harvest Festival in the Garden. That will be a major step in reducing time needed to maintain the garden. As it is now, it takes one person two hours, just about every day over the summer to water the garden. Once the drip irrigation system is operational, it will be automated with a timer at our faucet. We will only need to monitor it to make sure it works, as it should. Instead of 14 hours a week, we estimate the need for human intervention will be reduced to no more than 1 hour a week.

Garland MarketPlace – Saturday September 2, Downtown Garland Square
I was not able to make my usual visit to the MarketPlace on the downtown Garland Square this Saturday, but I’m sure it was as outstanding as it usually is and that most of my friends were selling their wares. I hated to miss it as I know they need my support as much I need their support. We are local together and have a ripple effect upon each other’s prosperity. VBikes—Another Garland Maker Gift to the DFW Area
If you were at the Garland MarketPlace on the downtown Garland Square on Saturday, you probably saw some yellow bikes and may have wondered what they are. There is a reason why we have the moniker “Texas made here”. We are a maker community with over 300 manufacturing companies within the boundaries of our 57 square miles and this doesn’t even count all the individual makers in our community who manufacture items in their homes to sell online and at the Garland MarketPlace.
VBikes is an app-based, station-free bike-sharing service based in Garland. To use a bike, an app user simply waves a phone over a bike's smart lock and pays one dollar per hour, with a limit of 10 hours per day
After a ride, the app shows the trip's duration, distance, calories burned and carbon footprint saved. For more information about this great Garland innovation for transportation, visit VBikes website.

GARLAND’S LABOR DAY PARADE – Monday September 4, 2017
No one celebrates labor or Americana better than the Maker Community of Garland, Texas. Respect for labor and people's work is the heart of our community. Our parade is deemed the “largest Labor Day Parade west of the Mississippi.” This Garland Labor Day Exchange Event packs a fun-filled day of events for your entertainment. Check out a car show, browse through an arts and crafts market and bring the little ones to the Kids Corner for special games and activities.
The 72nd Annual Labor Day Parade and festivities are presented by the Noon Exchange Club of Garland and will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 4.
A true community event, spectators will enjoy local bands, sports groups and floats during the parade through historic Downtown Garland.
The parade will begin at the intersection of Glenbrook Drive and Avenue D, then will head north on Glenbrook toward Main Street. Follow the parade east on Main and north on Fifth Street. The parade will continue down Fifth and will end near the Granville Arts Center.
Following the parade, gather in the Downtown Garland Square for the Sixth Annual Exchange Club Labor Day Classic Car Show and Kids’ BBQ Competition.
The Kids’ BBQ Competition is open to children ages 10 to 18.
The $20 registration includes a spot to compete against other youth pit masters of similar ages. Food, supplies and grills will be provided. Cash prizes will be awarded to first-place ($100), second-place ($50), and third-place ($25) winners in three different age categories. Special thanks to event sponsors Lowes, Walmart and Sprouts.
To enter the post-parade car show in Downtown Garland, please enter at Sixth and Walnut streets beginning at 9 a.m. Registration cost is $20 per car and includes a T-shirt and dash plaque for the first 50 entries.
