Guided by Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)-aligned environmental education curricula such as Project Learning Tree and Project WILD, Bob Jones Nature Center’s 2017 Eco-Explorations Camp will bridge between children and the wonders of the Cross Timbers Forest ecosystem this summer.

Instructors will lead activities and explorations of the rich diversity of creatures present on the state park’s 758 acres. Through outdoor explorations and experiments, arts in nature, eco-games and team-building activities, campers will increase their comfort level in outdoor settings and become experts on a variety of nature topics, all while hiking trails and enjoying weekly presentations from some of the most exciting and experienced naturalists and eco-educators in the DFW area.

Summer Day Camp guest speakers include the Dallas Zoo, Zooinversity, Blackland Prairie Raptor Center, Southlake Fire Department and others. Campers will emerge with a love of nature, knowledge of how to act responsibly toward wildlife and the environment and memories to tell for years to come.

BJNC educators will lead fun, inspirational Wilderness Workshops for tweens this summer, specifically designed for 10-to-14-year-olds. Each workshop focuses on a skill necessary to survive independent of technology, but also uses nature education apps and features to enhance their experience of the outdoors.

Workshops include Hiking Essentials, on July 12 and 13, with Ultimate Backpack List, Nutrition and Cooking and Hydration and Water Sources; Avoiding Hazards, on July 19 and 20, with Identifying Poisonous Plants, Recognizing Venomous Snakes and First-Aid on the Trail; Shelter-Building, on July 26 and 27, with Striking a Tent, Knot Tying and Woodworking and Constructing Bridges; and Navigation Skills, on August 2 and 3, with Geocaching, Off-Trail Hiking and Mapping.

Location: 355 E. Bob Jones Rd., Southlake. For more information and to register, 817-491-6333 or visit bjnc.org.
