Garden Installation Day at Sidney Lanier Expressive Arts Vanguard

Saturday, March 3, 2012

8:00 am - 5:00 pm

You are cordially invited to attend a REAL School Gardens' community garden installation event.  Please join the Sidney Lanier Expressive Arts Vanguard school community as they "dig in" to install their outdoor classroom.  We look forward to partnering with the school community at Sidney Lanier Expressive Arts Vanguard to turn learning in math, science and other subject areas inside out!

Garden Installations are days when the school community (teachers, parents, students, local groups, etc.) come together to do the dirty work of getting the school garden (outdoor learning classroom) installed.

Typical projects include:

• Preparing vegetable beds – tilling soil, adding compost

• Preparing perennial beds – tilling soil, adding compost, planting and watering

• Installing fence – digging post holes, installing fence with cemented posts

• Installing entry arbors – digging post holes, installing arbor with cemented posts

• Installing walkways – moving decomposed granite and stones and leveling the paths

• Planting trees – digging holes, planting and watering

• Building compost station – setting up bins and starting compost pile

During these installations, volunteers are encouraged to wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty, closed-toe shoes, hats or sunscreen, and/or insect repellant, if needed.

Volunteers are also encouraged to bring their own gloves and gardening tools, if they have them, but not necessary (please remember to write your name of your tools as not to confuse them with other tools lying around the garden).

It’s also recommended that volunteers bring a water bottle to refill throughout the day to stay hydrated, if they have one. If not, complimentary water cups will also be available at the garden installations but in efforts to cut down on our amount of waste, we encourage reusing water bottles whenever possible.

Kindly register by emailing Kendra at klemon@realschoolgardens.org; In addition, volunteers should register with the Dallas Independent School District by completing the background check application at: Dallas Independent School District
