If you’re looking for a farmers market this weekend (or any weekend) check out a new free app from Eat Green. It’s your direct link to EatGreenDFW’s comprehensive list of 22 area farmers markets—and they are all farmers markets, not just markets that claim to sell local food.
Try any of them and get to know some local farmers, ranchers and artisanal food makers. This weekend, you can expect to find the first of the blueberries and field tomatoes along with cucumbers, green beans, black-eye peas, some greens and lettuces, turnips, beets, carrots, radishes, cabbage, kohlrabi and onions. And more and more of the growers are growing organically. Just ask.
And don’t forget to bring a cooler to take home some pastured beef, pork and chicken (raised with no hormones and on natural diets not feedlot corn). The meats are sold frozen by law so you’ll need to get them home quickly if you don’t have a cooler.
Most markets also have eggs from pastured chickens. homemade breads and cookies as well as jams, jellies and pickles. There are a few—Coppell and White Rock to name two—that also have Gulf shrimp and other seafood.
And the new Collin County Farmer Market is celebrating Fathers Day with a lunch of hamburgers (made with grass-fed beef) and beer from FireWheel Brewing Company. (Lunch will be served at 11 a.m.)
