Run for the Environment at Cedar Hill State Park

Green Source DFW, a popular online publication, is hosting its inaugural Run for the Environment on October 11. The environmentally-themed publication, created by the Memnosyne Institute, chose a beautiful location for the 5K run/walk.Cedar Hill State Park will provide a picturesque backdrop. Many North Texans may not realize that the scenic 1,800-acre hilly, wooded preserve overlooking Joe Pool Lake is only 10 miles southwest of Dallas and 25 miles southeast of Fort Worth. “We wanted a setting where participants would see nature, rather than the sidewalks of downtown Dallas,” says Phillip Shinoda, founder and project manager of Green Source DFW.

In addition to hiking, Cedar Hill State Park offers birdwatching, camping and access to Joe Pool Lake, and organizers are hoping attendees will walk away with a new appreciation for the outdoor regional gem. After the run, participants can explore some of the park’s wooded, dog-friendly hiking trails. There will also be green vendors and live music on the scene and a view of the lake.

According to Shinoda, connecting North Texans to environmental issues, as well as their natural environment, is what Green Source DFW is all about. Through a website, weekly newsletter and social media, GreenSourceDFW is educating residents about green amenities, sustainable businesses and environmental organizations across the metroplex.

Every week, the website features original articles covering green news and trends in North Texas and offers an extensive green calendar with local festivals, seminars, classes, hikes and film screenings. In addition, there are listings for green businesses and organizations.

Every runner receives a free tree, courtesy of Preservation Tree and the Texas Trees Foundation, and a 100 percent organic race T-shirt. All proceeds support Green Source DFW and its mission to advance the environmental movement in North Texas.
